Whispers from the Path

The Spirit of a Place: Listening to the Soul of Where You Are

There is a quiet knowing that lives just beneath the surface of things.

You feel it when you walk into a room and something softens in your body…
Or when you step into a forest and instinctively lower your voice…
Or even when you move through a busy marketplace and sense a kind of hum—alive, aware, watching.

In shamanic traditions across the world, this is not imagined.

It is understood.
Everything has a spirit. Every place carries a consciousness.

Not metaphorically—relationally.

Mountains, rivers, homes, cities, doorways, thresholds… even the seemingly ordinary places like a shopping mall or a well-worn road. Some places simply hold energy. Others—over time, through relationship, memory, and presence—develop something deeper.

A heart.
A personality.
A Spirit.

The Living Field of Place

In many shamanic lineages—whether rooted in the Amazon, the Andes, or Northern European traditions—it is believed that we are always in relationship with the unseen essence of the world around us.

Land is not inert.
Structures are not empty.
Spaces are not neutral.

They remember. They respond. They participate.

A home, especially, becomes a vessel.

It gathers the imprints of laughter, grief, meals shared, conversations whispered, music played, tears released, love expressed. Over time, these threads weave together into something coherent—a presence that begins to greet you when you arrive and hold you when you stay.

This is what I call "the Spirit of a Place."

A Home That Welcomes

I spent the last two weeks in my Caribbean home—a place that, for me, has always felt undeniably alive.

Not just beautiful.

Not just peaceful.

But aware.

There is something about this home—the way the sea breathes just beyond it, the way the breezes move through the rooms, the way the light settles differently at different hours of the day.

The elements are not separate here.

They collaborate.

This past weekend, we filled the home with 25 people to celebrate a milestone birthday for my partner. Some guests had known each other for decades—childhood, university, careers, life chapters layered over time. Others were meeting for the first time.

Yet everyone arrived connected by one thread: their love for him.

And what unfolded over those four days was something I didn’t just witness…

I felt.

The home welcomed them.

Not in a poetic sense—but in a palpable one.

There was an ease that settled in quickly. Laughter came effortlessly. Conversations deepened without force. People who had never met before spoke like old friends by the second evening.

And what struck me most was this:

The house held us.

It loved the sound of joy echoing through its rooms.
It seemed to expand to accommodate connection.
It softened the edges of “doing” and gently invited everyone into “being.”

I watched shoulders drop.
Phones get forgotten.
Time loosen its grip.

And again and again, I felt the quiet presence of something that was not just architecture…

But Spirit.

When Place Becomes Participant

Some places simply contain us.

Others participate with us.

They amplify intention.
They support connection.
They invite certain energies forward.

A sacred site may evoke reverence.
A childhood home may stir memory.
A forest may guide you inward.
A well-loved kitchen may call forth nourishment and gathering.

And yes—even a shopping mall carries a kind of spirit. Often faster, louder, more transactional. You feel it in your body: the pace, the stimulation, the pull toward consumption.

Places shape us as much as we shape them.

The relationship is always mutual.

Tending the Spirit of Your Home

If this is true—if your home has a spirit, a consciousness, a way of being in relationship—then the question becomes:

Do you know it?

Do you listen to it?
Do you tend to it?
Do you allow it to support you?

You don’t need to be a trained shaman to begin.

You only need to be willing to slow down and notice.
A Simple Meditation: Meeting the Spirit of Your Home

This is a gentle practice to begin building a relationship with the spirit of your space.

Find a quiet moment when you are alone.

Sit somewhere comfortable in your home—perhaps in a place you naturally gravitate toward.

Take a few slow breaths.

Let your body settle.

Feel the support beneath you—the floor, the chair, the structure holding you.

Now gently bring your awareness to the space around you.

Not as objects… but as presence.

Silently or softly, you might say:

“Spirit of this home… I acknowledge you.”
“I am here, and I am listening."

Pause.

Notice what shifts—not in your mind, but in your body.

Then, with curiosity and openness, ask:

“Who are you?”
“What is your nature?”
“What do you want me to know?”

And perhaps:

“What do you need from me to feel honored, cared for, and alive?”

Do not force an answer.

This is not about hearing a voice in words.

Instead, notice:

A feeling.
A subtle emotion.
An image.
A memory.
A sense of warmth, stillness, or movement.

Stay for a few minutes.

Then, when you feel complete, offer gratitude:

“Thank you for holding me. I will continue to listen.”

 Living in Relationship

When you begin to relate to your home—and to the places you move through—as living presences, something changes.

You become less separate.

More attuned.

More reciprocal.

You may find yourself opening windows more intentionally.
Clearing space not just for aesthetics, but for energy.
Speaking words of gratitude aloud.
Inviting joy, rest, creativity, or connection with greater awareness.

And in return…

You may feel held.

Supported.

Welcomed.

Just as I did—watching a home by the Caribbean Sea open its arms and gather people into laughter, ease, and belonging.

---

There is a Spirit where you are.

Not someday.

Not somewhere else.

Here.

Waiting, perhaps, not to be believed in--

But to be noticed.

Julie, this touched my heart… I remember that time so clearly 🤍 It means so much that you’ve witnessed this unfolding over the years.

That space in New York held such a powerful chapter, and in many ways, it helped shape the woman I am now. This new home carries a different rhythm, but the spirit of it feels just as alive and supportive in its own way 🌿

I hope you’re in a place that’s holding and nurturing you, too. Sending you so much love right back 💙
