The Beginner’s Guide to Energy Healing - 9 Common Energy Healing Techniques

Energy healing is an ancient practice that has seen a resurgence in popularity as people seek holistic ways to improve their well-being. But for those new to the concept, it can seem a bit mysterious. I've put together a quick guide that aims to demystify energy healing, explaining what it is, how it works, and what you can expect from a session.

What is Energy Healing?

At its core, energy healing is a holistic practice that activates the body's subtle energy systems to remove blockages and stimulate the body's inherent ability to heal itself. The idea is that when the energy flow within the body is restored and balanced, physical, mental, and emotional well-being can be achieved.

Energy healing traditions span various cultures and have been practiced for thousands of years. Whether it's Shamanism from Peru, Reiki from Japan, Pranic Healing from India, or Qi Gong from China, the underlying principle is the same: enhancing the flow of energy within and around the body to promote wellness.

How Does Energy Healing Work?

Energy healing works by manipulating the energy fields that surround and permeate the body. Practitioners believe that these energy fields, sometimes referred to as "auras" or "biofields," can become blocked or imbalanced due to physical ailments, emotional stress, or negative thought patterns.

Here are nine common techniques practitioners use:


  1. Reiki: Originating from Japan, Reiki involves the practitioner placing their hands lightly on or just above the person’s body to channel energy where it’s needed. The energy flows through the practitioner to the patient, promoting relaxation and healing.
  2. Chakra Balancing: This practice involves focusing on the body's seven main energy centers, or chakras. Each chakra is believed to govern different aspects of physical and emotional well-being. By balancing these chakras, a practitioner helps to ensure the free flow of energy.
  3. Crystal Healing: Crystals and gemstones are used to draw out negative energy, attract new energy, balance chakras, and promote positive energy flow. Each type of crystal is believed to have its own unique properties and benefits.
  4. Pranic Healing: This no-touch technique uses the practitioner’s hands to scan the body for imbalances, cleanse the energy field, and energize specific areas to facilitate healing.
  5. Breath Work: Breath work involves using specific breathing techniques to influence the flow of energy within the body. By consciously controlling the breath, practitioners can help release stored tension and emotional blockages, promoting a sense of calm and balance. Techniques like diaphragmatic breathing, alternate nostril breathing, and breath of fire are often used to enhance energy flow and facilitate healing.
  6. Visualization: Visualization is a powerful tool in energy healing that involves creating mental images to direct energy and promote healing. By visualizing positive outcomes, healing light, or specific energy movements, practitioners can help clients focus their intentions and amplify the healing process. Visualization can be used to clear energy blockages, balance chakras, and manifest desired health outcomes.
  7. Shamanic Healing: Shamanic healing draws on ancient spiritual practices to address imbalances in the energy body. Shamans use rituals, drumming, chanting, and journeying to connect with spiritual guides and energies. Techniques like soul retrieval, power animal retrieval, and extraction are used to heal past traumas, restore lost energy, and remove negative influences. Shamanic healing aims to bring harmony to the spirit, mind, and body.
  8. Divination: Divination is used to gain insights and guidance from spiritual sources. Methods such as tarot cards, runes, pendulums, and oracle cards can help practitioners understand the root causes of energy imbalances and provide direction for healing. Divination can offer clients clarity, affirm their intuition, and support their healing journey by revealing hidden aspects of their energy field and life path.
  9. Meditation Techniques: Meditation is a cornerstone of energy healing, providing a pathway to inner stillness and heightened awareness. Techniques such as mindfulness meditation, guided meditation, and mantra meditation help quiet the mind, reduce stress, and enhance the connection to one's inner energy. Regular meditation practice can improve concentration, emotional stability, and overall well-being, making it an essential tool for maintaining energy balance.

And these are just a few! There are many more techniques and you will often find a practitioner who combines techniques. My favorites include Reiki, chakra balancing, shamanic healing, meditation, visualization, crystals, and divination.


What to Expect in a Session

If you’re considering trying energy healing, it’s natural to be curious about what happens during a session. While not every practitioner works the same, here’s a general overview of what you can expect:


  1. Consultation: Your first session will typically start with a consultation. The practitioner will ask about your physical, emotional, and mental health, any specific issues you’re facing, and your goals for the session.
  2. Preparation: You will then be asked to lie down on a treatment table or sit comfortably in a chair. You don’t need to remove your clothes, but it’s best to wear something comfortable.
  3. The Healing Process: The practitioner will begin the session using their chosen technique(s). For example, in a Reiki session, the practitioner will place their hands lightly on or just above different parts of your body. You might feel warmth, tingling, or a sensation of energy moving through you. During a crystal healing session, crystals will be placed on or around your body.
  4. Relaxation: Most people find energy healing deeply relaxing. It’s common to feel a sense of peace and calm, and some people even fall asleep during the session.
  5. Post-Session: After the session, the practitioner may discuss what they felt during the treatment, offer insights, and provide recommendations for maintaining your energy balance. You might be encouraged to drink water and rest to help integrate the healing work.

Energy healing is a gentle, non-invasive approach to wellness that can complement other forms of medical and therapeutic intervention. Whether you’re dealing with physical pain, emotional stress, or simply seeking greater balance in life, energy healing offers a path to enhanced well-being.
