Sound Check: How to Recognize the Voice of Your Higher Self

We live in a loud world, but some of the loudest noise happens entirely inside our own heads.
On any given day, your mind is like a crowded executive boardroom. You’ve got the Inner Critic pointing out your flaws, the People-Pleaser worrying about everyone else's comfort, the Planner organizing next week's schedule, and the Ego trying desperately to keep you safe by keeping you small.

But beneath all that chatter, there is another voice. It’s quiet, it’s steady, and it holds the absolute truth of who you are. This is the voice of your Higher Self—your soul, your divine spark, your highest consciousness.

As a shamanic practitioner and intuitive reader, the number one question I get from women who are trying to reclaim their power is: “How do I know if I’m actually hearing my Higher Self, or if I’m just making it up? How do I tell the difference between intuition and anxiety?”

If you’ve been struggling to hear that inner guidance, it’s not because your Higher Self is silent. It’s just that you haven’t learned its specific frequency yet. Here is how to do an energetic "sound check" and accurately recognize the voice of your soul.

1. Look for the Tone (The Higher Self Doesn't Scold)

The easiest way to tell who is speaking in your mind is to check the emotional tone of the message.
  • The Ego/Anxiety: This voice can be frantic, loud, repetitive, and legalistic. It uses words like should, must, always, and never. It creates a sense of immediate urgency (e.g., "If you don't do this right now, everything will fall apart"). It criticizes you or tries to scare you into action.
  • The Higher Self: This voice is calm, neutral, and incredibly loving—even when delivering a hard truth. It speaks in short, simple phrases. It doesn’t explain itself or give a 10-point lecture; it just states what is. If a thought makes you feel constricted and panicked, it’s anxiety. If a thought makes you feel spacious and grounded (even if it’s challenging), it’s your Higher Self.

2. Track the Somatic Response (Listen with Your Body)

In shamanic and energy healing traditions, we know that the body is an antenna for the soul. Your mind can be tricked, but your nervous system cannot. When your Higher Self speaks, your physical body responds.
  • The Sensation of Truth: Notice what happens in your body when an intuitive hit drops in. For many women, it feels like a sudden drop in pressure—a literal "settling" in the gut or an opening expansion in the heart chakra. You might take a spontaneous deep breath, or feel a wave of peaceful goosebumps (what I’ve heard called "truth bumps").
  • The Sensation of Fear: Anxiety and ego thoughts immediately trigger a contraction. Your shoulders hike up, your jaw tightens, your stomach knots, or your breath becomes shallow. Your body is telling you that this thought is born from fear, not divine guidance.

3. The Test of First Impression

Your Higher Self operates in the realm of the immediate. It lives in the micro-second before your logical brain boots up and starts analyzing everything.

Have you ever pulled a Tarot card or a Rune, and in the first fraction of a second, a specific knowing popped into your head—only for you to immediately overwrite it with, "No, that can't be right, let me look at the guidebook"? That first, unedited whisper was your Higher Self.

Your soul speaks in flashes of insight, sudden "knowings" (claircognizance), or quiet images. The doubt, the rationalizing, and the second-guessing that follow? That’s just your ego trying to take the steering wheel back.

How to Tune Into the Right Frequency

If you want to hear your Higher Self more clearly, you have to intentionally lower the volume of the external world. You don’t need a 2-hour meditation ritual to do this; you just need a few moments of intentional alignment:
  • Clear the Static: Before asking for guidance, use a quick Reiki self-treatment or a shamanic breath pattern to clear the frantic energy from your space.
  • Ask a Direct Question: Sit quietly, place your hands on your heart or solar plexus, and ask a clear question. “What is the truest next step for me here?”
  • Write without Thinking: Take out a journal and write down whatever comes up instantly, without editing, judging, or correcting. Let the soul speak before the brain can stop it.

Trust Your Inner Oracle

As an empowerment coach, my ultimate goal isn’t to give you the answers—it’s to guide you back to your own internal compass. You are your own best oracle. The wisdom you are searching for outside of yourself is already sitting quietly in your bones, waiting for you to slow down enough to listen.

This week, when a thought pops into your head, pause and ask: Does this sound like fear, or does this sound like my soul? Trust the quiet voice. It has never steered you wrong.
