Whispers from the Path

How to Get Unstuck When You're Feeling Unmotivated

6/23/2025

Picture
We’ve all been there—that frustrating feeling of stagnation, where even the smallest tasks feel insurmountable and motivation seems like a distant memory. When I’m stuck, it’s easy to sink deeper into inaction, weighed down by overwhelm, frustration, and guilt–that’s where I am with formatting my book!
In my practice, I know there are tools, both practical and spiritual, that can reignite my energy and help me move forward. No matter how stuck I feel, there’s always a way to shift my state.

I need motivation so badly right now, I decided to write about some tools that help me. (I’ll leave it up to you to decide if I’m procrastinating or distracting myself more 😜.)

Anyway, here are some ideas, blending spiritual practices, breathwork, and somatic exercises, to help you reconnect with your inner spark and restore a sense of flow. Try one, or mix and match to create your own personal reset sequence.
1. Pause and Reset with Breathwork

When motivation is low, your mind may be cluttered with overthinking or worry. Breathwork offers a way to quiet the mind while invigorating the body. By focusing on your breath, you engage with the present moment and stimulate your nervous system to shift out of stagnation.

How to Try It:
  • Box Breathing
Find a quiet space and inhale for a count of four, hold your breath for four, exhale for four, and hold again for four. Repeat this cycle for two to three minutes. This method calms the nervous system while bringing clarity to your thoughts.
  • Energizing Breath of Fire
Sitting upright, take quick, powerful inhales and exhales through your nose, focusing on contracting your diaphragm as you exhale. Start slow, try for 30 seconds, and build from there. This technique boosts energy and clears mental fog.

Why it Works
The internet and the breathwork practitioners I’ve worked with, tell me that breathwork helps regulate your stress response, easing overwhelm while revitalizing your mind and body. It’s like a mini-reset button for your entire system.

2. Reconnect with Your Body Through Somatic Practices

When you’re feeling unmotivated, your body may be holding onto tension, sluggishness, or unprocessed emotions. Somatic exercises bring your awareness back to the physical, helping you move stuck energy and reconnect with a sense of aliveness.

Somatic Exercises to Try:
  • Shaking it Out
Stand with your feet hip-width apart, bend your knees slightly, and start to shake your whole body gently. Begin with your hands, then add your arms, shoulders, and legs. Shake for five minutes, slowly increasing intensity. This primal movement relieves stress and creates space for new energy.
  • Stretching or Yoga (my fave!)
Choose simple stretches like reaching up to the sky, folding forward, or doing a gentle spinal twist. If you prefer structure, try yoga poses like child’s pose, downward dog, or cat-cow. These movements open up tight areas and restore flow to your body.
  • Mindful Movement (second fave)
Put on a favorite song and move freely without judgment. Don’t worry about how it looks; just pay attention to how it feels. Allow your body to guide you, releasing physical tension along with emotional blocks.

Why it Works
I’ve learned that somatic exercises help you tune into your body’s innate wisdom. Movement breaks the cycle of inertia while releasing any pent-up energy, clearing the way for motivation to reemerge.

3. Meditate to Reset Your Inner Compass

Sometimes, a lack of motivation stems from feeling disconnected from your deeper purpose. Meditation allows you to step away from surface distractions and reconnect with what truly matters to you.

Start Simple:
  • Guided Visualization
Close your eyes and imagine yourself in a place that inspires peace, such as a meadow, a beach, or a mountaintop. Picture yourself surrounded by light and ask yourself, “What do I need right now?” Take note of what arises.
  • Mantra Meditation
Repeat a comforting or motivating mantra silently to yourself. Phrases like “I am enough” or “I trust the process” can anchor you in a sense of calm and possibility.
  • Five-Minute Stillness
Sit quietly and focus on your breath, noticing each inhale and exhale. No need to “try” to achieve anything. Just be. This act alone can create a surprising sense of clarity. I especially like doing this in Nature!

Why it Works
Meditation quiets mental chatter and helps you tap into your intuition. Often, the insights that arise during meditation can reignite your sense of direction and purpose.

4. Use Nature as a Healer and Motivator

When you’re unmotivated, nothing breaks the monotony like stepping outside. Nature has an amazing ability to restore balance, grounding you while also energizing your spirit.

Ideas for Getting Outside:
  • Grounding (Earthing)
Stand barefoot on grass, sand, or dirt. Feel the earth beneath you and imagine it absorbing your stress and fatigue while filling you with fresh, supportive energy.
  • Walk with Presence
Take a slow, mindful walk through a park or any natural area. Notice the colors, sounds, and smells around you. With each step, visualize yourself shedding mental fog and taking in the earth’s vitality.
  • Sky Gaze
Lie down and simply look at the sky. Whether it’s daytime clouds or nighttime stars, gazing upwards can remind you of life’s bigger picture and your place within it. I’m always searching the sky–usually searching for the moon–day or night.

Why it Works
Nature soothes the nervous system, regulates emotions, and offers a fresh perspective. Even a few minutes immersed in the natural world can dissolve feelings of stagnation.

5. Create a Ritual for Releasing Stuck Energy

Feeling stuck often comes with underlying emotions like frustration or confusion. Establishing a ritual gives you a way to acknowledge and release these feelings while creating space for new energy to enter.

Personal Rituals to Try:
  • Journaling (another favorite of mine)
Write down what’s weighing on you. Don’t censor yourself; just pour your thoughts onto the page. When you’re finished, you might even tear it up or burn it (safely!) to symbolize letting it go.
  • Candle Intention Setting
Light a candle and set an intention for how you want to feel. For example, say aloud, “I release what holds me back and invite motivation and clarity.” Spend a few moments watching the flame, visualizing your intention taking root.
  • Sound Healing
Use a singing bowl, chime, or even a favorite playlist with soothing sounds to shift your energy. Close your eyes and feel the vibrations, allowing them to clear away stagnant emotions.

Why it Works
Rituals create a sense of ceremony and mindfulness, helping you honor and shift your emotional state in a meaningful way.

6. Reconnect with Joy and Playfulness

Sometimes, lack of motivation arises because life has become all work and no play. Reconnecting with joy can rekindle your spark in the simplest, most uplifting ways.

Ideas for Cultivating Joy:
  • Do Something for Fun
Try an activity that has no “productive” value but simply makes you smile. Dance wildly in your living room, doodle, or bake your favorite dessert.
  • Relive Childhood Pleasures
This advice was given to me by a shamanic colleague a few years ago and even today I treasure its wisdom. Think back to what you loved as a kid. Whether it’s blowing bubbles, playing a favorite game, or building something creative, these activities can bring a fresh sense of lightness and energy.
  • Practice Gratitude
Write down three to five things you’re grateful for, no matter how small. Gratitude has a way of shifting your focus from what’s lacking to what’s abundant in your life.

Why it Works
Joy and laughter are powerful energizers. They elevate your vibration, making it easier to re-engage with the tasks ahead.

A Final Encouragement (for you or for me)

It’s important to remember that moments of being stuck don’t last forever. Feeling stuck doesn’t mean you’re failing—it means you’re being called into deeper alignment. Motivation may ebb and flow, but with gentle and intentional practices, you can nudge yourself back into alignment. Start small, be patient with yourself, and trust the process. Often, the very act of showing yourself compassion is enough to reignite the spark you’ve been searching for. Use these ideas as your guide, and soon enough, you’ll find yourself moving forward with renewed energy and purpose.

If you’re feeling disconnected, I offer 1:1 healing sessions to help realign your energy and spirit. Just note that I just blocked the week out on my calendar to format that book!!

Let’s walk this path together. You’re not alone.
